Thanking God for Answered Prayers!

My last post regarding my mom stated that she was on a life support.  It was a scary time for us. Fortunately, the doctors were able to find and stop the bleed while she was on the vent.  It took a couple days to get her blood pressure stable. She was then taken off the vent and did well so she was moved from the intensive care unit to a regular floor.  They were able to get her to swallow foods and after a few days they moved her from there to a skilled nursing facility.  I went to go see her right afterwards. Mom was very weak and even breathing was a chore.  She was on oxygen. She couldn’t make it to the restroom and we would spoon feed her meal sometimes because it was such an effort to feed herself.  Her legs were swollen.  She was on a lot of pain medication at the hospital so she wasn’t always aware of her surroundings.  It was very difficult to see my mom like this.  Mom’s are always there to take care of you right? That is the way it should be.

Background…My mom had emergency abdominal surgery for a perforated ulcer and then while she was healing from that later had an angiogram to fix a bleed caused by another ulcer.  She was placed a ventilator to stay alive so they could fix the second bleed.  The doctors and nurses in the CCU and ICU units were amazing. She is eighty-five years old. She is one strong mama and I know your prayers were helping.

I spent 4 days visiting her in the nursing facility when she first arrived.  I washed some clothes and brought them to her room. She seemed so fragile.  The nurses helped lift her when she needed it. The physical therapist helped to get her out of bed and took her to physical therapy.  They made sure she was dressed everyday.  She was assessed when she first arrived and determined to have pureed foods.  She drank better with a straw. They brought her 3 meals a day plus snacks and drinks. They made her laugh. All this was done for her to help her get stronger and our goal was to bring her home.  When I left her to come home to my family, I cried because I wasn’t sure if she would be able to come home again.

My mom normally lives at her home with my sister and my brother watches over them.  She hadn’t been home since July after the first surgery. My brother brought my sister to be with her almost every afternoon so they could be together in the nursing facility (every morning while she was at the hospital).  We are so thankful he is there for them.  The facility even let her bring in her dog.  My other sister brought her sometimes too.  They all have been getting the home ready for her arrival back.

A few weeks later…

I went back up to visit mom and she was doing so much better. The physical therapist worked with mom almost everyday to get her stronger.  She is eating regular food.  She is walking to the bathroom and down the hall without a walker.  She is aware of her surroundings and looking forward to coming home.  She even put a puzzle together which is her favorite thing to do. I can’t imagine all that my mom went through to to get where she is.  God is not done with her yet.  He must have given her the will she needed to recover.  I am thankful for the staff and friends and family that came to visit and helped us along this journey. I am thankful for the prayers that everyone prayed.  God is so good.

My mom doesn’t remember much about the hospitalization although she is very grateful to them.  She was heavily medicated.  But I am sure she will remember the people who helped her on her journey to get home during her rehab.  She is grateful for the people in the hospital and facility who took care of her during this time and for all the people who prayed for her to get well!  It has been a long road and she is finally back home. We are thrilled. I know my sister is so happy to have her back home with her and mom is happy to be home. God is so good!

How the body can heal is a miracle from God. Prayers are powerful! God is Amazing how he provides strength, prayers, courage, and people along the way! A big thank you for all your love, support, and prayers! I am so thankful I still have my mom.

Thank you Jesus!

Blessings!

Cheryl
