Seven ways to Refresh and Rejuvenate for Mom’s
Hey moms, we all have had days where we need to refresh. Let’s face it we work 24/7. We get tired, drained, and cranky if we don’t take care of ourselves. Husband’s this may help for some great ideas for Mother’s day or birthdays. Hint Hint…
Moms please find someone trustworthy to watch your children to give you a much needed break once in a while. You need to take care of yourself and find a way to rejuvenate so you can go back to your family refreshed and ready to start again. I know it can be hard or you may feel guilty for taking the time, but you will be thankful later and so will your family. Don’t get me wrong, I love and enjoy my family! But I also remember the days when my children were little and I needed a break.
Here are seven things I would do, and still do on occasion to refresh.
Fortress of Solitude
Yes, even Superman had a fortress of solitude. My fortress of solitude is a nice hot bubble bath. Yep, when my husband was home in the evening and I needed a break, I would ask him to watch the kids so I could go to my fortress of solitude. I would read a book, or just sit quietly as my muscles would melt in the warm bath. Sometimes I would even fall asleep. But just knowing I didn’t have to communicate with anyone for a while was wonderful.
Take Yourself to a Movie
Some people may think it odd to go to a movie by yourself. But when you are with people all day, it can be wonderful to put yourself in another place enjoying an adventure or love story for a while. It is a great way to get your mind off things. Also be sure to treat yourself to major popcorn, soda, or candy since you are only paying for yourself. Remember you have earned it and can thoroughly enjoy it without being interrupted.
Dine out all by Yourself
Oh my goodness this was such a treat for me. Again, people might think why all by yourself. People may look at you strange, but I did not care. They don’t know that you have been taking care of children all day and just want some me time. So plan a time, figure out your favorite restaurant, and take yourself out for dinner. I usually went to Olive Garden or a quiet Olgas. Let the waitress serve YOU for a change. Get your favorite drink and order your favorite meal. Bring something to read if you like or check your phone while you wait to be served. Because you can do it without being interrupted. You aren’t cutting up food to feed to your children. You aren’t trying to feed two children at once on either side of you. You aren’t trying to make sure your kids are using their manners and not having a fit. You can think and relax. You can slowly savor every morsel of your meal and take your time. You are being taken care of and there will be no dishes to take care of afterwards. I loved doing this for myself. Remember you are worth it, you deserve it, and you will be a better mom and wife afterwards. Those were some of the best meals.
Go to the Library or a Cafe
There were times when I just needed some quiet to get things done or to rejuvinate. I found if I just got out of the house, it helped me to concentrate and not feel the need to do all the things calling to me at home like laundry, dishes, cleaning, etc. So when I could get my husband or a babysitter, I would go get a chai tea at the local cafe or go to the library. I could read magazines and catch up on the latest news, do CE credits, correct or plan schoolwork. read a book, or just gather my thoughts. It is amazing what a different atmosphere can do. I could be productive in areas I couldn’t seem to get to at home. Afterwards, I felt refreshed and could focus better on what needed to be done at home.
Get a Massage
This may not be for everyone, but I don’t think we realize how stress effects our body. If you can get away and find a good masseuse treat yourself to a massage. That hour you are away is so relaxing and you will feel like a new person when you come back to your family.
Water
There is something refreshing about water. Whether you drink a nice cold glass of water or it is just around you. If you can’t get in a full bath, maybe you can get a quick hot shower in after you put your kids down for a nap. If you can find someone trustworthy to watch them, I found that going to a beach nearby and walking or sitting by the water was so refreshing as well. Seeing the horizon brings peace and balance for me personally. If you can’t find a lake, then maybe a river or stream. Watching the water flow by reminds me that the world can continue peacefully among the chaos. That it is well with my soul and it will all be ok. Then I can go back to my family rejuvenated and start again.
Pray
I start each morning with prayer. “Lord! Help me today to be the wife, mom, and person you want me to be. Give me wisdom and discernment along the way. Give me the wisdom to know when I need a break and not be afraid to ask someone for help so I can get refreshed and be the person you want me to be”. Pray throughout your day as you go along. It does give us peace when we give everything to God.
If you train your children in their younger years, which takes a lot of work, you will see the fruit of your labor and it will get easier. While you are in this season of training a child in the way they should go, I hope these suggestions are helpful to you as we all walk this journey of motherhood together.
