One Way to Defeat Worry is to Pray!

Prayer is a way we connect with the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Many people pray at mealtime to thank God for provisions. People also pray before bed to thank God and to give their cares and requests to Him. Even if you do those prayers, there are times you may wake up with anxiety or worries. The Holy Spirit may bring someone to mind. I believe the Holy Spirit may be encouraging us to pray at these times as well. The Bible says to “Cast your Cares on the Lord and he will sustain you: he will never let the righteous be shaken, Psalm 55:22. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7. It also says to not fear 365 times. Every day God tells us in his word to not fear. He also tells us not to worry. “There I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” Matthew 6:25

Yet, many times this is easier said than done. It is easy for us to worry about what the future holds when we don’t know the future. People make decisions we can’t control. There are life events we do not expect, health issues for us or others, decisions to make, or a miracle or breakthrough from God is needed.

This is why trusting and knowing God’s word and prayer is so important.

Prayer is our a way of communicating to God through the Holy Spirit in Jesus name. Notice how the Holy trinity is so intertwined as one when we pray.

Prayer helps us to communicate to the Lord our thankfulness for his provisions, our concerns, our requests, our desires. We can go to our Heavenly Father for wisdom, insights, others. You can talk to Him anytime and he is always listening.

Why pray to God our Heavenly Father?

One reason is to respect His reverence. As a follower of Jesus Christ, I respect God’s wisdom, insights, character, love, compassion, and provision. I thank Him for creating me and for all that I am and have because I am nothing without Him.

Another reason to pray to God is it helps when you cannot control circumstances. For example, when my husband is working, my children are traveling, or going on a job interview, or ill. I can’t control those things, but I know that God can watch over and protect them. I ask him to send his angels over them and to care for them when I can’t. I then trust Him and have seen him be so faithful.

Third, praying to God gives peace. If you wake up in the middle of the night with worry, the first thing to do is pray. Give all your concerns to God which can be many. When you pray and finally have peace you know that you have given all that was on my heart to Him. You can trust Him for all your needs. His will be done. This peace beyond all understanding is a wonderful reason to pray.

Prayer is so powerful! Sometimes there is a reason why you may be up in the night. God can speak to you through prayer as well. One time I could not figure out a health issue for my child and God gave me an answer at night that know one could figure out. Then when we asked the doctor about it and he said it wouldn’t hurt to try it, we found it was the answer to our prayers. This type of thing happened multiple times when I was raising my children. The Lord can give us wisdom and discernment. He gives us insights that I know are from him that you can’t get anywhere else. “I am your servant; give me discernment that I may understand your statutes”. Psalm 119:125 Humble yourself before God and ask him for this in prayer.

God loves us so much. He wants to walk with you as you go through this journey. Having prayer with him brings your relationship so much closer.

God has been with me through so much such as our marriage, raising children, providing wonderful friends, grieving my parents, and more. I am so glad He has been with me through it all.

That is what I want for you. Make time for God and pray as you go along your day, at night, whenever the Holy Spirit prompts you to pray. He is always listening and it doesn’t have to complicated. Just talk with Him. You are not alone. He is your loving Father who is waiting for you to come to Him. The peace He will give you will give you the strength you need to accomplish what His will is for you.

Sometimes when you are praying for a certain area in your life you could use some help in finding the right words or would like some scriptures to help you along in those areas.

Here are three books that I have used over the years that have helped me.

Prayers that Avail Much was given to us during an EPIC School of Ministry class my husband and I took at our church. It is topical and the author put scripture in the prayers that apply to the topic. It is a great resource for when you want to pray for specific personal prayers, prayers to the Father, needs for others, Marriage, Children, Ministry and more. I love how she lists the scripture references under each prayer she wrote so you can find them in the Bible and in her prayer. God’s word is alive and active and when you incorporate it in your prayers like she did, you have confidence praying God’s word and His will.
